Perhaps you have already heard of Cuba’s Hotel Nacional, its incredible history and grandiose construction on a bluff overlooking Havana’s bay. Full of turrets, columns, and arches, this unique confluence of Spanish America with art deco is utterly singular.

Opened in 1930, it was built to capture wealthy seasonal tourism, mainly from the United States. It ended up attracting thousands of celebrities from all over the world, the U.S. mafia not excluded. These figures still fill the spaces in the myriad of photos that hang from all walls. It is not uncommon to share the hotel on any given visit with Ministers, Presidents or perhaps one of Hollywood’s finest, and many leave comments in the bulging visitor’s book.

The hotel has 8 floors with 457 rooms, including one Presidential and 15 other suites. Some of the rooms on the hotel’s Historical Floor actually have commemorative plaques dedicated to the celebrities who stayed there, like Eva Gardner (225), Johnny Weissmuller (232), Bola de Nieve (229), and more. These rooms still have the original floor, bed frames and furniture from the 1930’s.
